Review: The Rocky Horror Show at Bournemouth Pavilion – A First-Timer’s Experience

The Rocky Horror Show is one of those iconic musicals that has stood the test of time. First performed in 1973, Richard O’Brien’s legendary rock ‘n’ roll show has been entertaining audiences for over 50 years, with its outrageous characters, catchy tunes, and cult following. But, believe it or not, I had never seen the show or the film before, so I had no idea what to actually expect when I went to see it at the Bournemouth Pavilion last night. I’d heard of the audience participation, the extravagant outfits, and the sheer fun of it all—but it surpassed all expectations!

Our evening started off at the press night event, hosted by the fabulous BH Live team, they absolutely nailed the pre-show atmosphere. We enjoyed Frank ‘n’ Furters hot dogs (a playful nod to the infamous Dr. Frank-N-Furter), plenty of drinks, and they set up fun photo opportunities with props to get us all in the mood. It was the perfect way to build anticipation for what was to come.

From the moment we arrived at the theatre, the atmosphere was electric. So many audience members were dressed up, fully embracing the spirit of the show. As a Rocky Horror newbie, I quickly realised that this was not just a show—it was an experience. The energy from the crowd, the audience heckles, and the sheer joy in the room made it something truly special we were laughing from start to finish and of course we all got up and enjoyed preforming the Time Warp at the end.

The performances were absolutely fantastic, with the cast delivering each song and scene with so much energy. If you’ve never seen The Rocky Horror Show before, don’t hesitate—go in with an open mind and just enjoy the ride. The Rocky Horror Show is at the Bournemouth Pavilion until Saturday, 8th February, and tickets are still available. Trust me, you don’t want to miss out on this one!

They’ve got an incredible program of shows coming up throughout 2025 including Shrek The Musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Chicago – check out more of whats on here.
