As a mum of three teen girls now at secondary school, I know all too well the chaos that comes with school life; the endless homework, online lessons, projects that seem to appear out of nowhere, and those last-minute “Mum, I need to print this!” moments just before bed. One of my favourite things about this laptop is how easy it is to use. It comes with ChromeOS already installed, so we literally opened it up, logged in with my Google account, and we were ready to start. No complicated setup, and no endless updates before we can get going.
It’s powered by an Intel® Celeron® Processor N4500, which might sound a bit techy, but in plain English, it’s perfect for everyday tasks like browsing the web, typing up essays, and using Google Docs or Sheets. It’s quick, responsive and reliable – exactly what you need for schoolwork, and it doesn’t cost the earth.
With 8GB of RAM, it can easily handle a few apps open at once without slowing down. So if your teen is researching online, streaming some background music, and working on a document all at the same time (as they do!), it keeps up perfectly well.
Storage-wise, there’s 128GB of eMMC space, which is plenty for school files, photos, and even a few downloaded shows for downtime. Most schoolwork these days is stored in the cloud anyway, so you’re unlikely to run out of room.
And at this price point, it’s genuinely impressive what you get; a solid, reliable laptop that doesn’t need constant charging, doesn’t break the budget, and just quietly gets the job done.
Great for families
What I really like is that we can all use it. With different Google accounts, each of us has our own login, so my teens can do their homework, I can quickly check emails or sort out online food shopping, and no one’s files get mixed up. It’s lightweight too, so easy for them to pop into a backpack and take to school if needed.
Battery life is another bonus, it lasts for hours on a single charge. Which means no hunting for chargers halfway through a task It’s ideal for busy family life, where things need to just work without any fuss.
Homework tips for busy families
Having the right laptop definitely helps, but I’ve learned that there’s more to good homework habits than just the tech. Here are a few things that have worked for us:
- Create a dedicated homework space.
Having a calm, clutter-free spot makes such a difference. It doesn’t have to be fancy; just a small desk or quiet corner where they can focus. The Acer Chromebook’s large screen is brilliant for this, as it feels like a “proper” workstation. - Keep a schedule.
Between school and social lives, keeping track of homework deadlines can be tricky. We use a shared Google Calendar so everyone knows what’s coming up, it helps avoid the dreaded “I forgot!” panic. - Have the right equipment.
A reliable laptop, good lighting, and some basic stationery go a long way. The Chromebook’s quick start-up means no wasted time waiting for it to load (because once they sit down, you want them to get straight into it before the motivation disappears!). - Encourage regular breaks.
Teens can get easily overwhelmed, so we use a rough “20-5 rule” after about 20 minutes of work, take a 5-minute screen and snack break. It helps them focus for longer without burning out.
