Beach Picnics & Coastal Walks
One of the best things about living in Dorset is having so many beautiful beaches right on our doorstep. A beach picnic is such a simple but fun family activity, especially during the warmer May half term weather.
Pack up some snacks, a football, scooters, or a bucket and spade, and head to the coast for the day. Some of our favourite family-friendly beaches in Dorset include:

Even if it’s not quite warm enough for swimming, a beach walk, ice cream, and picnic tea always feels like a win with the kids.

The walled garden fountains are always a hit with younger children during warmer weather, and there are often family-friendly events running during school holidays too.
It’s perfect for a relaxed half term day out that works for a mix of ages.
Moors Valley Country Park
Moors Valley Country Park is one of the best outdoor family attractions in Dorset and brilliant for adventurous kids.
There are fantastic woodland walks, a popular play trail, cycle paths, picnic areas, and lots of open space to explore. If your children love being outdoors, this is such a good option for half term.
You can also hire bikes or visit the Go Ape course if you want to turn it into a bigger day out, but simply exploring the park itself is completely free.
Parking charges do apply, but if you don’t mind a little walk, there are often nearby places to park for free.
Durlston Country Park
Durlston Country Park is another beautiful free Dorset day out for families.
The coastal views here are incredible, and there are plenty of walking routes suitable for families with children. Kids will love spotting wildlife, exploring the nature trails, and running around the open grass areas.
It’s a lovely place for a slower-paced day out, especially if you want to combine it with a visit to Swanage.

The large boating lake, walking paths, and playground make it perfect for younger children, and there’s plenty of open space for ball games, scooters, or a picnic.
Being so close to Poole Harbour also makes it a lovely place for a walk on a sunny afternoon.
Poole Museum
If the weather isn’t great, Poole Museum is a brilliant free indoor activity in Dorset.
The museum explores the history of Poole, the harbour, and local Dorset life, with interactive exhibits that children often really enjoy.
It’s a great option for a quieter half term activity and works well combined with a walk around Poole Quay.
Lulworth Cove
Lulworth Cove is one of Dorset’s most famous beauty spots and a lovely place to visit during half term.

Parking can be expensive during busy periods, but there are often free parking spots slightly further out if you don’t mind walking a little further.
