Halloween is just around the corner and while you might not traditionally link the spookiest day of the year with non-standard home insurance, the two have more in common than you think.
Non-standard homes are those that are at increased risk – usually because of the material the property is made of, the land it’s built on or because of the applicant’s job, or credit history – and some of the most iconic scary movie characters would definitely have struggled to get their homes covered by standard insurance…
1 – Count Dracula: the Count’s ancient castle is made of stone and in need of some renovation. It’s a mountainous region that might suffer floods or landslides. And all those candles would probably be a fire risk.
2 – The Allen Family, Evil Dead: Allen Cabin, the remote cabin owned by the Allen family where five students decided to vacation in Evil Dead – is nestled deep in the woods so could face all kinds of hazards from fire to falling trees and it’s unoccupied (understandably!) and possessed
3 – Norman Bates, Psycho: an old building like the Bates Motel would likely raise a few questions but it’s also a home used as a business where guests stay overnight
4 – Pennywise, IT: while an evil clown is unlikely to be accepted for home insurance if Pennywise did apply he would find that a job at a circus is classified as a non-standard occupation
5 – The Myers’ family, Halloween: the family home of Michael Myers is actually a perfectly standard home. Nothing wrong there. Although as Michael has a habit of coming back from the dead every few years to terrorise local residents so it would probably be better to leave the area rather than worry about insurance.
