A clean home can help to reduce stress and improve your mood. Most people enjoy living in a clean and tidy home – even if they hate actually cleaning it. The trick is to find a cleaning routine that works for you and your lifestyle. You could clean little and often, so you don’t have to spend an entire day doing housework. You could make a chores chart to spread the cleaning across your family. Everyone can do their bit so you can live in a nicer home. 

The Anxiety and Depression Association of America found that cleaning combined with the result of a cleaner home helps reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. Your home could have an impact on the mood of your entire family. It’s important to keep your space fresh, tidy and practical. 

Here is a list of all the areas you may forget to clean this winter. 

Vacuum and clean behind the fridge 

When was the last time you cleaned behind the fridge? You should do it every three months to stop food and dust from building up. If you abandon this area for too long, mould could start to grow, and pests could sneak in. 

You should unplug your refrigerator and pull it away from the wall. From the vent from the bottom of the fridge and use a handheld vacuum to clean it. Use a cloth to wipe down the walls of your fridge and remove any grease behind it. Sweep and mop the floor space the fridge was sitting on. 

Change air purification filters

We spend more time indoors in the winter months. The air purification and dehumidifiers need to be working properly when we are inside all the time. To change the filter on your dehumidifier, you need to remove the bucket and filter, clean it, and reset it. 

Declutter the house

Decluttering should be a part of your cleaning routine. Encourage everyone in the family to go through their belongings and separate anything they no longer use. You can create a pile of unwanted clothing, tech, books and other miscellaneous items. You can then decide whether to donate, recycle and sell the pieces.

You should also declutter your junk drawer in the kitchen to the wardrobes under the stairs. You never know what sort of stuff is accumulating in the drawer.

Sanitise door handles

It’s cold and flu season and the pandemic is still around us. You need to sanitise your door handles and other commonly touched surfaces in your home. For example, you should clean remote controls, light switches, tables, countertops and keyboards.

Dirty filters of air purifiers, as well as furnaces and air conditioners, can cause poor indoor air quality. And this is bad for our health. It’s important to clean them at least once every three months.
