5 Ways to Make Your Home More Eco-Friendly

More and more people are looking for ways to live a more conscious lifestyle and it’s a safe bet to assume you’re one of them or you wouldn’t be here. Removing plastic from your life, ditching meat, exercising more, and eating healthily are just some of the ways you can do it. You might have been wondering whether installing solar panels is the answer to a more eco-friendly home, but there are plenty of other ways that won’t break the bank. If you want to make some changes to your home, here are 5 top suggestions.

  1. Double-Glazed Windows

If your home still has single-glazed windows, it’s about time you joined the 21st century and upgraded to double glazing. They provide much better insulation against heat loss, so you’ll also see a reduction in your heating bills. When you’re deciding what to install, take a look at timber window manufacturers as wooden frames are more environmentally friendly than uPVC. They also provide better insulation and last a long time.

  1. Turn Things Off

How many of your electrical gadgets are on standby? There’s got to be at least a few. Conserving energy is one of the best things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. Keeping your electrical items on standby is a waste of energy. Turn things off when you’re not using them, and you’ll be amazed what a difference it makes to your energy bills.

  1. Recycle Everything

You’re probably already recycling a range of different things, but do you think there are ways you could do more? Almost everything you use can be recycled if you haven’t worked out a way to reuse or reduce first. However, think of recycling as last resort because reducing and reusing are the best ways to help yourself, your community, and the environment.

  1. Use LED Light Bulbs

LED light bulbs are a far more efficient way of lighting your home. They last much longer than conventional bulbs and use less power. They’re available in a wide range of colors, designs, and brightness so you’ll be able to find one to suit your needs. As they’re more efficient, you’re going to be saving energy, which is good for the environment and your bank balance.

  1. Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

How do you keep your home clean? You’ve probably got a range of household cleaning products you bought from the store. Do you know that many of these products are packed with nasty chemicals that are not only bad for the environment but for the health of your family too? Several eco-friendly brands can keep your home sparkling clean without the toxic chemicals. It’s also possible to make cleaning products yourself with many of the items you’ve got in your store cupboard.

One last tip before you go. Buy yourself some houseplants as they are very effective at absorbing harmful volatile organic compounds. Not all houseplants do this, but there are many that do. The bromeliad, for example, removes more than 80% of the nasties in the air.
