When we found out we were expecting Nancy, one of the biggest questions we faced was how our home would work for our growing family. With five children, space is never something we take for granted! We loved our house and did not want to move, so adding an extension felt like the right way to make it work better for us.
The extension gave us the extra room we needed at that particular stage of family life, but homes are never really “finished”, are they? Families change, children grow and the way we use our space changes along with them. Now that Nancy is getting older, I have naturally started wondering what might come next for our house and whether an annexe could one day be part of that.
Creating space without having to move
Moving house is not always the best answer when you need more room. There are costs involved, it can be incredibly stressful and, perhaps most importantly, it may mean leaving a home and an area you genuinely love.
An annexe can offer another option by creating a separate, usable living space within your existing property. Depending on its design, it could include a bedroom, bathroom, living area and even a small kitchen. That makes it much more versatile than simply adding another room to the main house.
For a growing family like ours, that flexibility is very appealing. Our needs today will not be the same in five or ten years, so any addition would need to be able to change with us.

How an annexe could increase property value
An annexe can potentially make a home more attractive to future buyers because it offers something many standard properties do not: flexible, semi-independent accommodation. Buyers may see it as a home office, guest suite, space for an older child or somewhere for an elderly relative to live nearby while retaining their independence.
That flexibility can help a property appeal to a wider range of households, particularly as multigenerational living becomes a practical choice for more families. While the exact value an annexe adds will depend on factors such as its size, quality, location and the local property market, well-designed additional accommodation can be a real asset.
Of course, adding an annexe is a significant project, so it is important to think beyond value on paper. It needs to work well, complement the existing property and offer space that people will genuinely want to use.
I have been searching online at how Annexe’s can be designed and used. Seeing some completed projects makes it much easier to picture how an annexe could fit into a family home without feeling like an afterthought.
A space that can change with your family
One of the biggest benefits of an annexe is that its purpose can evolve. With teenagers in the house, I can already see how useful it could be as a little more space for older children while they study, start working or save towards a home of their own. It would give them some independence while keeping them close to the family.
At another stage, it could become guest accommodation, somewhere for relatives to stay or even a dedicated workspace. As somebody who works from home, the idea of having a proper office away from the noise of everyday family life is definitely tempting!
Looking further ahead, an annexe could also offer a solution if a parent or relative needed to live closer to us. Having their own private space while still being only a few steps away could provide reassurance for everyone.
Planning an annexe carefully
There is plenty to consider before deciding whether an annexe is right for your home. Available garden space, access, privacy, utilities, planning permission and building regulations all need to be explored. It is also worth speaking to a local estate agent about the likely impact on your property’s value before committing to the investment.
The design matters too. An annexe should feel connected to the main property while still offering enough separation to be useful. Good insulation, natural light, storage and an accessible layout could all make the space more comfortable and adaptable for years to come.
Thinking about our home’s next chapter
Building our extension while expecting Nancy taught me that improving a home is not just about adding square footage. It is about creating a space that supports the life you are actually living.
Our extension was the right next step for us then. In the future, an annexe could give our family even more flexibility while potentially increasing the value and appeal of our property at the same time.
We do not have firm plans for another building project just yet, but with five children growing up quickly, I have learned never to say never! Whether it eventually became a workspace, a first taste of independence for one of the girls or a home for a loved one, an annexe could be an investment in both our property and the future of our family.
